A Color Affair and How It Came To Be

My name is Michelle Black and I am an artist. I have always loved sketching and painting;
creating something out of nothing. And now that I have started my own business, I figured you
might want to know (or I want to tell) where it all came from and maybe where it's going.

I first realized I wanted to be an artist when I was in the 6th grade. Sometimes, it's hard to think
back that far but it eventually comes around. I took an art class while I was going to Ed White
Middle School in San Antonio, Texas. It was in that art class that I fell in love with art. It may have
been the art teacher, who was just the coolest adult I had ever met at the time or it may have
been because I could draw football players and skateboarders, solely to gain the attention of the
boys in the class. Most likely, the art I was creating was the first real thing I took pride in and felt
good about myself while creating the art and when I finished the piece. And I was only a chubby
12 years old with a face full of pimples when I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I
wanted to create ART!

I continued my Art Classes all the way through high school, Duluth High School in Duluth,
Georgia where my family moved to when I was a freshman. Well, I wanted to be this big, famous
artist and get paid to do what I love ... But then Life Happened. Too many other exciting things
happened in my life and I just kind of put my art on the shelf and watched it collect dust for a
number of years before I picked it back up again. As both my children were born and growing,
the three of us (single mother then) moved to Savannah, Georgia where I became inspired
again after so long. The city, the people and the art in that city would move anyone so I was no
exception. I started painting again, drawing into the wee hours of the morning, painting anything
and everything I could. When I couldn't afford canvases, I could afford cheap wood. When I
couldn't afford paint, I used pencils or found old house paint. Some of the paintings you see on
my website were created during my two-year stay in Savannah, while others were created after I
moved back to the Atlanta area, at the time, Lawrenceville.

In June of 2007, I met the man I was meant to be with, through a website some people have
heard of, a few that have been on and one that everyone laughs when I say it. www.plentyoffish.
com  is the site and though it sounds corny, that's where I met my NOW Husband, Danny. My
Danny is not only my best friend and sole mate; he's also the one that inspires me to do great
things. He’s supportive, attentive and very kind to my children and me! My kids and I just adore
him. Whether it's my art, my website or folding Danny’s clothes, he wants me to be the best I can
be. I don't know if I have ever had that kind of inspiring person in my life so I will soak it up while I
can and try not to disappoint him.

Danny and I bought our first home together on June 11th and turned around and got married on
June 20th, 2008. The week of our honeymoon (woo-hoo), we spent most of our time (not all of it,
mind you) working around the house. We painted the kids' bedrooms and decorated all that we
could. This includes my ten year old son's room. He wanted a soccer ball on his wall with his
name on it and begged me to paint it for him.

So I sat down at my table and drew and drew until I got that soccer ball down right. Then I went
up and painted my son's mural; after many experiments and errors later, he had a custom
mural. I had so much fun painting that soccer mural and decorating his room that I thought I
could do this for a living! And that's how the mural business took off. I took pictures of the mural
and placed an advertisement on www.craigslist.com on July 7th, 2008. I said “Custom Murals for
Sale” and “Let’s talk about what you would like to see in that special space” … and people
started emailing me!

And now you know the history … stayed tuned for the present … so I can have a future!
